Courvoisier’s legacy began when Emmanuel Courvoisier the founder and Louis Gallois the mayor of Bercy decided to open a wine and spirit company on the outskirts of Paris, just north of the river Seine. It was close to the river for easy transport, already had a thriving wine trade and sat just outside the thick Paris city walls, so they didn’t have to pay taxes. Bercy was the perfect location for their business.
Louis Gallois and Emmanuel Courvoisier’s reputation grew so quickly amongst brandy connoisseurs that the first Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte visited the warehouse in Bercy. During the Napoleonic war, Napoleon started giving Courvoisier cognac to the troops in the artillery units to lift their morale.
Courvoisier nurtures close relationships with over 800 vine-growers to ensure the grapes used are the finest in the Cognac region. All barrels are hand made by Courvoisier’s skilled team of coppers. The 200-year-old-oak trees used for the barrels are personally selected by the master blender. Courvoisier mainly works with the finest four: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois. The grapes are harvested at the end of summer at their peak condition. Grape sugar is transformed into wine when the juices are naturally allowed to ferment for seven days after the vine-growers press the grape juices.
Courvoisier V.S. is a classic cognac created by the master blender, Patrice Pinet. This cognac is primarily crafted with a smaller balance of Eaux-de-vie from the Petite Champagnes region. Aged between three to seven years in French oaks from the Limousin Forests. Bottled at the standard 40% ABV.
