Speyburn Distillery is located in Rothes, Moray, Scotland and was founded by John Hopkins in 1897. Hopkins while hunting for the perfect spot for his distillery, discovered the Granty Burn, an untouched stream hidden in a secluded Speyside valley. He instantly knew that this exceptional pure water from this burn would produce a remarkable whisky with a naturally refreshing character. Hopkins trusted his intuition and appointed famous distillery architect Charles C Doig to design the distillery and to this day, Speyburn has its classic pagoda ventilator, a hallmark of Doig’s design. Over 100 years after the founding of the Speyburn Distillery, Speyburn remains the only distillery to use the crystal clear and pure water from Granty Burn.
John Hopkins also set himself an almost impossible challenge which was to build and craft a whisky in time to toast the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as 1897 was Queen Victoria celebrating her 60th year of reign. Production began on 1st November 1897 and it wasn’t until Christmas Day that the team at Speyburn were successful in distilling their first drop of liquid. On the last night of 1897, the team at Speyburn battled through ice and snow to ensure the casks was placed in a dunnage warehouse, just in time to toast the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Speyburn Distillery shut its door for the first time in 1939 when the distillery was home to the Scottish Artillery Regiments during the war. After the war ended, Speyburn Distillery re-opened its doors in 1947. Due to incredible interest from customers all over the world and to further share Speyburn with the rest of the world, the distillery began expansion works in 2014 to double production capacity.
Speyburn Hopkins Reserve is a Speyside Single malt Scotch whisky created to honour the Founder John Hopkins and bottled exclusively for Travel Retail. Bottled at 46% ABV.
