Description
The Botanist Islay Dry Gin is distilled inside Bruichladdich Distillery. Bruichladdich Distillery is located on the Rhinns of the isle of Islay in Scotland. The distillery produces mainly Single malt Scotch whisky but has offered artisanal gins. Since 2012, the distillery is owned and operated by Remy Cointreau, a French family-owned business group whose origins date back to 1724. Famous brands for cognacs, Remy Martin and Louis XIII are produced by the French family.
Bruichladdich distillery was built by Harvey brothers in 1881, William who was 32 at the time, John who was 31, and Robert who was 23 years old. They chose the westernmost part of the island, on the shore of Loch Indaal, on the Rinns of Islay. The Harveys were a whisky family that had owned two distilleries in Glasgow since 1770. The three brothers combined their talent to build their third distillery, Bruichladdich Distillery.
Financed by William the oldest brother and some family members, designed by John and engineered by Robert. At the time, the distillery was state-of-the-art unlike Islay’s older distilleries, which was developed from old farm buildings. It was built around a large and spacious courtyard with very efficient layout plans with stones from the sea shore. To produce a very pure and original spirit, opposite of the styles produced by older farm distilleries, a uniquely tall and narrow-neck stills were chosen. After an argument with the three brothers broke out even before the distillery was completed, William ran Bruichladdich distillery until a fire in 1933 and his death in 1936.
The Botanist Islay Dry Gin is crafted from 22 wild Islay botanicals that are sustainably foraged by Professional Forager, James Donaldson and distilled by Adam Hannet, Head Distiller. The Islay botanicals are foraged each year from March to October, from the hills, bogs and shores of Islay and it takes an estimate of seven months to pick and dry each botanical. Bottled at 46% ABV.
