Glenfiddich distillery is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery in the Scottish burg of Dufftown in Moray. Glenfiddich is also the world’s best-selling single malt whisky. William Grant was the founder of Glenfiddich Distillery and was a manager at Mortlach distillery before starting his own distillery.
In the summer of 1886, William Grant with his seven sons and two daughters by his side, began to build the distillery by hand, stone by stone only with the help of one stone mason. William and family finally completed construction after one year and named it Glenfiddich which stand for Valley of the Deer in Gaelic. The first drop of spirit falls from Glenfiddich Distillery copper stills on Christmas Day 1887.
William’s passion, determination and pioneering spirit continues to guide the Glenfiddich brand. The brand is one of the few single malt distilleries to remain entirely family owned and is now the World's Most Awarded Single Malt Scotch Whisky, a true reflection of the founder’s innovative nature, passed down through the generations. Today, the fifth generation of the Grant’s family runs the distillery and has expanded to include three more malt distilleries, Balvenie, Kininvie and Ailsa Bay, a grain whisky distillery, Girvan and others such as Monkey Shoulder and Hendrick’s gin. In 1957, Glenfiddich introduced its iconic triangular bottle and in 1963 became the first brand to be marketed as a single malt whisky worldwide. It is also the first Scottish distillery to open its visitor centre in 1969.
