Shinjiro Torii at the age of 20 had a dream to “create an original Japanese spirit blessed with the riches of Japanese nature and ‘monozukuri’ craftsmanship: a relentless pursuit for perfection, meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality.” He then founded the House of Suntory in 1899 to pursue his dream.
Inspired by traditional Scottish whisky, Torii envisioned a Japanese approach by choosing a terrain and climate completely different to those of Scotland to create a unique kind of whisky. The Yamazaki Distillery is Japan’s first and oldest malt whisky distillery established in 1923 by non-other than Suntory's founder Shinjiro Torii.
Yamazaki lies in a misty valley between Mt.Tennozan and Mt. Otokoyama where three rivers meet and has long been known to have the best pure mineral waters in Japan. Yamazaki Distillery uses a wide variety of casks to store and mature its malt whisky. Slightly roasted one-time ex-bourbon casks, North American white oak casks, Spanish sherry casks and finally the mizunara (Japanese oak) casks.
To show Yamazaki’s profound dedication in producing quality whisky, Shinjiro hired a man named Gennojo Tateyama to be Suntory’s dedicated Western-style cask maker in 1934. To this day, the same cask making style has been passed on from generation to generation. Today, there are very few distilleries who have their own cooperages to make casks.
Spiritual and deep, Suntory Single Malt Whisky Yamazaki was born in 1984 at Yamazaki Distillery, the soul place of Japanese whisky, its signature multi-layered taste is highly praised by whisky connoisseurs all over the world. Yamazaki 25 Years is an increasingly rare item that won World’s Best Single Malt Whisky in 2012. Bottled at 43% ABV.
