Peddlers Gin is one of the first international spirits distilled in China. Craft spirits are a global trend and small distilleries from all over the world in South America, Africa, the United States and even in European states with a strong distilling history are producing new small-batch spirits.
In 2016, three friends, Joseph Judd, Fergus Woodward and Ryan McLeod set their mission in designing a legitimate Chinese gin flavoured with local botanicals of China. Joseph has expertise in branding and marketing while Fergus has worked with distilled spirits and acts as head distiller for the company with Ryan running sales and distribution.
The name Peddlers is to honour Shanghai traditions and its way of life as the world’s biggest trading port. In the old days of China, one can buy almost anything from bicycle cart peddlers. The bottle, typography and overall image labels for the gin were inspired by Shanghai city in the 1930s.
Peddlers Gin is masterfully crafted using eleven botanicals namely Juniper Berries from Northern Hungarian Highlands, Sichuan peppers from Qingxi a city 150miles southwest of Chengdu, Buddha’s Hand from Yunnan to replace traditional citrus fruits such as orange or lemon, Lotus from Gansu in Northern China, East Asian Mint also from Yunnan in Southwest of China, Liquorice from an organic farm in China’s southern Guangdong province, Tianshan Almonds from Tianshan, Angelica Roots from North Eastern China, Cardamom Pods from Java Indonesia, Coriander Seeds from mountain areas of Northern India, and Chinese Cassia also from Yunnan near the Tibetan borders.
