Le Haut-Médoc de Lagrange 2016 is a Red wine produced in the Bordeaux region in France, by Château Lagrange. Château Lagrange is a winery in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Bordeaux region of France and is owned by Japanese liquor giant Suntory. Classified Third Growth Chateau Lagrange has been established for over 600 years in the Left Bank commune of St. Julien and Le Haut-Médoc de Lagrange is their second label wine, from 18-hectares of vineyards they own just down the road where the climate is slightly milder but the vineyards share similar gravelly soils.
Haut-Médoc is an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) for wine in the Bordeaux wine region of southwestern France, on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary. For most of its history, the Haut-Médoc was a vast region of salt marshes used for animal grazing rather than viticulture and in the 17th century, Dutch merchants began an ambitious drainage project to convert the marshland into a usable vineyard area. Their objective was to provide the British market a wine alternative to the Graves and Portuguese wines that were dominating the market. By the 19th century, the wine region of the Haut-Médoc was one of the most prosperous in France, with wines that had an international reputation that would be unparalleled till the late 20th century.
GRAPE AND WINE
Under the permitted grape varieties of the AOC of Haut-Médoc, 52% of the viticultural area is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, with additional cultivation of Merlot, Petit Verdot and to a small degree Malbec. Also permitted under the regulations of the AOC are the grape varieties Cabernet Franc and Carménère.
Le Haut-Médoc de Lagrange 2016 is a traditional blend of 70 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 24 % Merlot, and 6 % Petit-Verdot and it is made with the same expertise and attention to detail as the flagship Château Lagrange Saint-Julien, but made for earlier drinking at a fraction of the price. It is described by top critics and Bordeaux winemakers as "the second coming of Bordeaux" and compared to the great vintages of the early 1980s - classic and ageworthy; powerful but with restraint and finesse.
Le Haut-Médoc de Lagrange 2016 is full-bodied and fresh with Medoc notes of black fruits and hint of menthol. Perfectly balanced, with silky tannins and a long finish, this is a terrific Bordeaux value from a noble estate that is a worthy addition to any cellar.
