Glenrothes Distillery is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky producer located in the town of Rothes in the heart of the Speyside region of Scotland. Glenrothes Distillery sits beside the Burn of Rothes, a river that flows through the town of Rothes. The Glenrothes brand is renowned for its quality, structure and flavour of their whisky resulting from over 140 years of whisky making tradition. Since the opening of the distillery, the whisky is one of the most sought after on Speyside.
Glenrothes Distillery was built in 1878 by James Stuart & Co, who also worked in the nearby Macallan Distillery. The distillery had a shaky early days and turbulent history. Extension works began in 1896 but over-proof whisky is notoriously highly flammable and a fire in 1897 caused serious damages to the Distillery. In 1903, the Distillery was hit with a serious explosion that caused even further damages. This was not the end as another fire started in the distillery’s Warehouse One that caused the loss of estimated 900 thousand litres of whisky. The last fire in 1962 afforded the opportunity for expansion and a further re-build was done in 1982 for even further expansion. Glenrothes brand and distillery is currently owned and operated by The Edrington Group in a bid to accelerate the single malt’s growth in international markets.
The bulk of Glenrothes spirits are matured mainly in European and American ex-Sherry casks, built to specifications in Jerez, Spain. Ex-Bourbon casks are also used but to a lesser extent to create complexity in the flavours of the liquid.
Glenrothes Whisky Maker’s Cut is matured exclusively in First-Fill Sherry seasoned oak casks and bottled at a cask strength selected of 48.8% by Glenrothes Master Whisky Maker.
