Glenglassaugh Distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery located just outside the Speyside region of Scotland, close to a small town of Portsoy, Banffshire. The distillery was established by a local entrepreneur James Moir and his 2 nephews, Alexander and William Morrison in the year 1875. James Moir had an expanding grocery business in the town of Portsoy and wanted to open a distillery to satisfy the growing demand from his customers.
The site was originally chosen due to its proximity to a pure and clean water supply from Glassaugh Springs, easy access to nearby barley fields and also because the neighbouring site is known locally to have many illicit distilleries producing excellent whisky. Following the death of James Moir and William Morrison, Alexander Morrison was forced to sell the distillery in 1892 to Highland Distillers which is a subsidiary to The Edrington Group. The whisky from Glenglassaugh Distillery has traditionally been used in production for blended whisky such as Cutty Sark, Laing’s and The Famous Grouse.
In 2008, an independent investor, Scaent Group purchased the distillery and released some pre-1986 stock as exclusive Highland single malt scotch whisky with outstanding success and has won many awards and accolades. Scaent Group refurbished the mothballed distillery and restarted production and in 2009, the company introduced 2 new innovative products. In 2013, Benriach Distillery Company acquired Glenglassaugh Distillery and in 2016, Brown-Forman Corporation acquired Benriach Distillery Company, making Brown-Forman the new and current owners.
