Description

Glenfarclas Distillery is a Speyside whisky distillery in Ballindalloch, Scotland. Glenfarclas translates to the meaning Valley of the Green Grass, which signifies the rich green pasture land which surrounds the distillery. The original owner of Glenfarclas distillery was Robert Hay and after his death in 1865, the distillery was sold to his neighbour John Grant for £512. John Grant’s family owns the distillery till today. George Grant is the sixth generation of the family and is the Sales Director of Glenfarclas Distillery.

Glenfarclas is one of the oldest distilleries in Speyside and is also one of few plants to retain stills that are heated with direct fire. In 1981, the distillery tried using steam but the conclusion was that the guts went out of the new make spirit and a rich distillate is needed to be able to cope with the tannin structure and rich fruits of ex-Sherry casks. A mix of European ex-Oloroso Sherry oak butts and hogshead is used to mature Glenfarclas whisky and is sourced exclusively from Jerez cooper Miguel Martin.

A balance between supplying stock for third-party blends and retention of a significant percentage for single malt bottlings has also resulted in Glenfarclas having more significant volumes of aged stocks than most distilleries. In 2007, Glenfarclas released ‘The Family Casks’, a collection of vintages released every year between 1952 to 1998. Glenfarclas has also been credited to have pioneered the cask-strength bottling when it launched its 105 cask-strength bottlings in 1968. It was also one of few distilleries to open its door for visitors in 1973.

Glenfarclas 21 Years was initially released exclusively for the Travel Retail Market and is bottled at 43% ABV.
