Glen Elgin distillery is a major contributor to blended whisky and remains a minor cult among malt aficionados and is revered by blenders. Glen Elgin was part of Diageo’s Hidden Malts range before being dropped in favour of Singleton brand. Glen Elgin distillery is located in hamlet of Fogwatt, a small village in Moray, Scotland.
Glen Elgin distillery was the last distillery to be built during the boom years of 1890s, the next Tormore distillery was built in 1958. The owners were William Simpson, a former manager of Glenfarclas brand and James Carle, an agent for the Scotland Bank. They sold the distillery in 1901 and the distillery went through different owners before becoming part of Diageo in 1930s and now it is licensed to White Horse Distillers Ltd. Glen Elgin is still a major key component of White Horse Blended whisky which is exported to over 200 countries worldwide.
The distillery operated entirely on paraffin engine and water turbine until electricity arrived in the 1950s. Although the distillery has seen major refurbishments in recent years, it maintains the look and feel of a small traditional distillery. There are no space-age computer panels and the highly regarded whisky continues to be made with a hands-on approach.
