In the summer of 1886, William Grant with his seven sons and two daughters by his side, began to build the distillery by hand, stone by stone only with the help of one stone mason. William and family finally completed construction after one year and named it Glenfiddich distillery which stand for Valley of the Deer in Gaelic. The first drop of spirit falls from Glenfiddich Distillery copper stills on Christmas Day 1887. Five years later in 1892, William Grant opened his second and most handcrafted single malts distillery, The Balvenie.
In 1963, Girvan Distillery, the largest grain distillery in the world was built in just 9 months under the direction of Charles Gordon, the great grandson of William Grant. Girvan was also the most advanced distillery in the world at the time. The very first still built continues to make great whisky to this day. Known as ‘No.1 Apps’, a distillery team for apparatus, was joined by 4 other stills in the following 50 years. A new type of still was introduced in 1992 to enable a unique process called Multi Pressure System (MPS) Distillation. Distilling at various pressures and under vacuum in particular situations, allows Girvan to vapourise and distil at lower temperatures, resulting in a sweeter, fruitier, cleaner and purer spirit.
Girvan Distillery uses Quercus Alba, an American White Oak for maturation which gives rich characters to the Girvan Patent Still Single Grain whisky. The whisky created at Girvan Distillery is mainly used in the creation of Grant’s blended Scotch whisky and other blended Scotch whisky. Determined to give grain whisky the respect it truly deserves, William Grant & Sons released a range of Girvan Patent Still Single Grain Whiskies, starting with this UK Exclusive launch edition of their 25 year old, bottled at 42% ABV.
