Description 

Cardhu is a brand of Speyside Single Malt Scotch whisky located in Moray, Scotland. The distillery was founded by whisky smuggler John Cumming and his wife Helen in the year 1824. The Distillery is now owned and operated by Diageo and the distillery makes up an important part of the Johnnie Walker blended whisky which is also owned by Diageo. The word Cardhu derives from the Scots Gaelic word Carn Dubh, which translates to Black Rock.

The Distillery was initially built high up on Mannoch Hill, above the River Spey due to the peat softening the water. Helen was mainly responsible for running the distillery and used to sell the bottles of whisky to passers-by through the window of their farmhouse.

In 1885, the distillery was rebuilt on a new piece of land and continued to be owned and operated by the Cummings. This time, the distillery was run by Elizabeth Cumming, the daughter-in-law of John and Helen Cumming. The stills from the old distillery were sold to William Grant who set up Glenfiddich Distillery.  With the new distillery, Carhu could produce triple the amount of the previous one. Most of the output from Cardhu Distillery was sold to Johnnie Walker & Sons, as Cardhu is known to be the heart of the Johnnie Walker Blended series and the increasing popularity of the Johnnie Walker & Sons blended whisky. The Cardhu Distillery was sold to Johnnie Walker & Sons in 1893 under the conditions that the Cumming family could continue running the day-to-day operations.

Cardhu 12 Years is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch whisky and is popular for being an easy-going and gentle dram. Cardhu is also the best-selling single malt whisky in Spain with its softer and sweeter character matching the warmer climates. Bottled at the standard 40% ABV.

TO THE EYE

Medium Amber.

TO THE NOSE

Lightly sweet with pear, apple and notes of charred oak.

TO THE TONGUE

Well-rounded and rich with autumn fruits and a hint of peat and spice.

TO THE END

Long and dry with a hint of smoke and toasted grain.
