Thomas Dakin purchased a site in Warrington, England, with the intention of distilling gin in the year 1761, thus beginning Bombay Sapphire’s heritage. In 1831, the Dakin family purchased a still and adapted it to separate the exotic botanicals from the neutral grain spirit, capturing the flavours of the botanicals in the vapour, an artisanal distillation process now known as Vapour Infusion, and still faithfully used by Bombay Sapphire today. The Bombay Sapphire Distillery has opened its doors for public visits in 2014. The distillery still uses the original Carter-Head stills, Tom and Mary, from the early 1830s. Two state-of-the-art 12,000-litre copper pot stills, Henry and Victoria have recently been added to cater for their massive demand for the gin.
Master of Botanicals, Ivano Tonutti hand-selects the botanicals used in Bombay Sapphire. The botanicals are then gently vapour infused instead of traditionally boiling them directly in the spirits. Bombay Sapphire gin is easily recognisable by its distinctive blue bottle and every drop of Bombay Sapphire contains 10 hand-selected botanicals from exotic locations around the world. The 10 selected botanicals include liquorice from China, Cassia bark from Indo-China, Coriander seeds from Morocco, Angelica roots from Saxony, Juniper berries and Iris root from Italy, Lemon peel and Almonds from Spain, Grains of paradise from West Africa and lastly Cubeb berries from Java. Bottled at 47% ABV.
