[Martell NCF, Martell V.S.O.P Red Barrel, Remy Martin X.O, and Remy Martin Louis XIII are some of Mr.Chow’s cognac recommendations.]
Cognac is a French spirit produced from distilled white wine and can be classified as a type of brandy. Brandy can be made in many regions of the world, but for cognac to earn its title, it must be produced in the town of Cognac in the region of Charente of France, and must also be distilled twice in copper pot stills, then aged in French oak barrels for at least two years. This gives cognac its distinct flavour and colour.
To be frank, there is no universal “best cognac,” because the real best of the best is decided by you based on your own taste, budget and other factors you may consider. This is why today, Mr.Chow is determined to help you find YOUR best cognac.
But first, let’s first get familiar with the basics, shall we?
You may have noticed that cognac bottles come labelled with capitalised letters of “VS”, “VSOP”, and “XO” among others. These designations actually indicate how long the brandy or cognac has been aged as well as its quality.
Again, no one is better than the other. You may think a cognac that has been aged longer means it is better, but that may not be the case. Young cognacs like a VS tend to have fresher, livelier aromas of fruit, whereas older Eaux-de-vie like a VSOP is usually smoother, with obvious notes of oak and spices. It all comes down to one’s personal preference!

The Martell Non-Chill Filtered cognac employs the technique of filtration at room temperature, allowing the cognac’s flavours and aromas to rise to the forefront when it is chilled for tasting. All of the spirit’s character along with its velvety mouthfeel is retained, showing off its bright citrus notes and classic Martell fruitiness no matter how you choose to enjoy it.

The Eaux-de-vie used is aged in barrels of fine-grained oak for at least four years. The ‘Red’ barrel refers to the reddish colour of the wood aged for at least two to eight years, achieving the perfect state for the Eaux-de-vie to develop more refined aromas, embodying the signature lush fruit notes of a Martell VSOP married with subtle woody overtones to produce a harmonious and elegant cognac.
