Ballantine’s Brand is a range of Blended Scotch whisky produced by Pernod Richard in Dumbarton, Scotland. The Founder, George Ballantine was a farmer’s son and at the age of 14, left home and started to learn grocer apprenticeship in Edinburg. In 1827, after five years as an apprentice, 19-year old George Ballantine opened a new grocery in Cowgate, Edinburgh supplying a range of whiskies to his customers. In 1857, George pioneered the ‘shop and drop’ before the age of internet shopping by offering free delivery within 10 miles.

In 1865, George delegated the store's operation to his eldest son, Archibald, while he opened a larger establishment in Glasgow where he concentrated on the wine and spirit trade, catering to clients that included the Hindu Royal Family. It is around this time that George also began to create his own blends. The business was growing and the additional demand drew second son, George Junior, into the business. George Ballantine retired in 1881 and his two sons took over the business. This was also the year Ballantine Brand was exported worldwide.

Ballantine’s 12 Years Blended Scotch whisky with the primary ingredients for the blends are Miltonduff and Glenburgie as well as whisky from fifty other distilleries worldwide. Bottled at the standard 40% ABV. The creation of Ballantine’s 12 Years started with a simple question of “What whisky do the people who make whisky drink?” and Ballantine’s Master Blender created this whisky that he would want to drink. The bottling is rumoured to be square because, during the Prohibition Era, American Salesman could conceal the bottle easily in the briefcase without the bottle rolling around. The distinct unique shape is still used today but without the need to hide it in the briefcase.
